YISHUN POND REVITALISATION

YISHUN POND REVITALISATION

In a multi-agency collaboration with Alexandra Health, National Parks Board, Public Utilities Board and the Housing Development Board, this project developed what was originally a bare reservoir area into a unique waterfront park. The rejuvenated Yishun Pond now functions as a public space for communal bonding and recreation, and provides the patients of the adjacent Khoo Teck Phuat Hospital an extended garden environment where they can enjoy the healing benefits of nature.

Marshlands have been created along the pond’s shoreline to soften the water edges while serving a larger environmental purpose by biologically treating the water fed into the pond from three monsoon drain inlets through their wetland systems. Contrary to regular ponds and reservoirs, numerous floating wetland islands have been also introduced into Yishun Pond, which not only enhance the water body but also serve as excellent filtration systems for residual chemicals in the water and contribute extensively to the re-emergence of aquatic life.

Both the marshlands and floating wetlands comprise of a proprietary system that was designed and built by Tropical Environment. Since their introduction, these wetlands have greatly enhanced the biodiversity of the area, with wildlife such as iguanas, snakes, dragonflies, migratory birds and ducks having become a common sight. Yishun Pond is also unique for its ‘floating perch’ that has allowed visitors to enjoy a variety of birds as they rest on the platform and float on the lake.

Water from the pond is also channeled into a filtration system where it is cleansed before being used to fill the water features and irrigate the gardens in the adjacent hospital, with rains sensors regulating this water source to prevent wastage - a recycling process that has contributed significantly to reducing the hospital’s overall water consumption.
