AQUATIC GARDENS,
GARDENS BY THE BAY

The Aquatic Gardens at Gardens by the Bay is home to Singapore’s largest display of cultivated water-loving plants, featuring spectacular waterfront gardens established by Tropical Environment alongside the bay’s distinctive Kingfisher and Dragonfly Lakes.

More than a thing of beauty, these plants were selected on their ability to thrive in semi aquatic and aquatic environments, creating a habitat rich in biodiversity that supports a variety of widllife such as birds, fish, butterflies, dragonflies and turtles. These plants also act as a natural eco-filter by absorbing excess residual compounds such as nitrogen and phosphorus from water captured from surface runoffs or pumped in from the connecting Marina reservoir, playing a vital role in maintaining the right amount of nutrients in the lake.

The lake water is also run through 2 primary filters, known as the filter beds and filter strips, which are strategically located where water enters and discharges from the lake system. The filter beds consist of four layers (comprising of loamy sands, an anaerobic layer of course sand, a transition layer of coarse sand and a drainage layer of gravel), while the filter strips consist of the same four layers in varying proportions. These bio-retention systems operate when water infiltrates into the filter media and moves vertically down through the profile. Only minimal light compaction was carried out on these layers to avoid subsidence and uneven drainage.
