COOL MOIST CONSERVATORY
GARDENS BY THE BAY

Nestled within Singapore’s world-famous garden attraction, Gardens by the Bay, the Cool Moist Conservatory showcases the extraordinary beauty and biodiversity of Cloud Forests. The tasks undertaken here by Tropical Environment included the development of a proprietary rendering system that simulates a ‘Living Skin’ of a natural mountain for a 42-metre high concrete mountain structure, enabling it to sustain assorted plant life - a phenomenal feat in plant development.

Featuring plant life from tropical highlands up to 2,000-metres above sea level, the mountain render has been densely planted with large collections of orchids, ferns, bromeliads, begonias, anthuriums and pitcher plants – all of which are epiphytic, hence adapting well to growing on vertical walls and requiring little substrate. Special stringent tests were carried out on the mountain render prior to its installation to determine its ability to sustain various plant life and its physical resilience to wear and tear, with its high moisture retention taken into special consideration. The render is composed of a porous, lightweight proprietary mix of organic components, and forms a continuous layer that covers the entire outer surface of the concrete mountain lattice, as well as its inner roof surface, inner elevations and inside edges of all apertures. It is secured to the mountain lattice using a multi-component bonding layer with elements that are able to withstand corrosive action, and is inclusive of comprehensive automated drip irrigation and drainage mechanisms.
