This mega green roof is one of its kind in all of Singapore and South East Asia, with Tropical Environment responsible for designing its green roof installation and development process.

Spanning 8,000 square metres, the green roof features a combination of several undulating turfed roofs that gracefully embrace the three blocks of NTU’s five-storey School of Art, Design and Media.

The challenge here was to keep planting material light while turfing roofs that slope as steep as 10 to 45 degrees. The entire green roof system ranges just +65 64511922 millimeters in thickness and makes use of a special highly porous, soiless media that is highly desirable for plant development. The green roof media is also specially designed to capture and retain rainwater which limits the need for frequent watering. The green roof is even incorporated with an irrigation system that uses water from a rainwater harvesting tank, most of which is collected from the green roof system.

Besides aiding in rainwater harvesting, the green roof also works to insulate the building against tropical heat and cool ambient temperatures, providing the benefits of energy savings. It even serves as an aesthetic outdoor space for communal activities. This green roof project has garnered numerous positive reviews for its contribution to the environment and is currently a study for green roof projects in the pipeline throughout the region.
